Fundamental Course
Toon Club offers several courses in which
children learn the intricacies and the fantastic art of animation
through fun. The Fundamental course is a 24 hr. (12 x 2hr.
sessions) course. As the name suggests, this course is the
cornerstone of intiating animation to a beginner. Fundamental
course offers:
- Definition and history of Animation
- To create animations using optical devices like Thaumatrope,
phenakistoscope, Zoetrope, flip sticks and flipbooks
- Children understand simple principles of animation like
ease in-ease out, timing, stretch and squash, anticipation-action
etc and exposed to various laws of physics (density, inertia,
weight, gravity) through various exercises done on flipbooks.
Some of the exercises done on flipbooks are bouncing ball,
pendulum, morphing shapes, dancing line, cannon ball, balloon,
walk cycles etc
- Different techniques of animation: Clay animation, Stop-motion
animation / Pixilation, Cel animation.
- The art of Story-telling- Here the kids write their own
stories which they then storyboard, after which they design
characters, layouts, backgrounds etc.
- At the end of each session children are shown historically
significant films- 1st animation film to be ever created,
1st film with sound, 1st computer generated film etc.
At the end of the course, in addition to a certificate,
children receive CD-ROMs with all their works they have created
during the course.
Mixed Media Animation Course
This is an on-going course conducted once a week.
Following a modular approach, children expand their imagination
and knowledge with their exposure to mixed media animation.
The course does not require pre-requisite and students can
join in any time in the ongoing course.
As the name suggests, children enjoy dabbling and mastering
various genres of animation which include clay, camera-less
animation, drawing directly on film, beads, collage, matchstick,
paper cut-out, straw, sand and whatever they can lay their
hands on!
Principles of Physics like weight, inertia, persistence
of vision, ease-in /out, anticipation, action, centre of gravity,
secondary action and follow through, wave principle, inverse
kinematics, curve reversals are introduced and imbibed. Of
course, not to mention the main take-away - visualization,
creativity, story-telling & art.
Toon Shorts
Toon shorts is a program where students become young
film makers and make their own short films. In this program,
children ideate a socially relevant concept, storyboard, animate
and direct their very own duration film all by themselves
under Toon Club supervision.
Films made at the Toon Shorts program have entered at festivals
in France, Finland, California, Greece among others (refer
to http://www.toonclub.net/articles.htm Mid Metro Article-
September 2004 and download the films from our website).
Good films will be sent to various festivals and presented
to various channels for possible screenings. Since this is
a subsidized program, Toon Club will be producer for the films
but the proceeds (if any) from screenings and royalties will
be shared with the young film-maker, whereby 10% of the proceeds
will go to the young film-maker. The film-maker will have
full right for exhibiting the film for non-commercial use.
If any of the films are selected at the international festivals,
the film-makers will beinvited to the festival at their own
cost and expense, or as per the specific festival’s
rules.
Pre-requisites:
- Passion and commitment! (interested young film-makers
will be screened and enrolled at the sole discretion of
Toon Club).
- Devotion of minimum 3 hours a week (1.5 x 2 sessions)
These films after completion will be sent to festivals around
the world.
- Children who have done the Fundamental course or Mixed
Media Course for minimum 3 months.
Advanced Course
Advanced course caters to individuals 14 years and above.
This course delves into History of animation, animation drawing
techniques, advanced animation exercises teaching classical
animation principles, storyboarding and film-language concepts.
Students participating in this program will be admitted at
the discretion of Toon Club based on aptitude.
Duration: 3 months, twice a week.
Pre-requisite:
- Fundamental course attendance.
- Appearance in Intermediate and Elementary drawing exam.
School Connect
We customize the course to the specific needs and requirements
of the school.
Research shows that children's understanding of Animation
Logic, or how animation works, goes hand in hand with concepts
learned at each grade level. These include:
The Arts: Aesthetic principles of design, composition,
contrast and visual symbols.
Motor skills, hand-eye coordination and the ability to repeat
a drawing are honed in the course.
Reading and Writing: Principles of storytelling,
story structure, characters and settings help children express
themselves beyond the realm of experimentation.
Science: Children are exposed to scientific principles of
visual perception, cameras and projection technology.
Physics: Physical laws and limitations
of movement, velocity, gravity, transformation and metamorphosis
are also complex ideas that come into play when children are
having their experience of creating animation. This is when
they begin to apply the laws of the natural world to their
animation.
Teachers Training
Toon club offers training program exclusively for teachers
enabling them to take it on themselves. Here teachers can
also use animation in the classrooms as a tool to teach subjects
